USHERING IN A NEW YEAR OF HOPE, JOY AND COLOUR

"Leaving behind what has been, by anyone’s standards, a particularly challenging time, the Maison Hennessy is thrilled to celebrate Chinese New Year with a specially commissioned piece from contemporary artist Liu Wei entitled “SPRING,” created to ring in this incoming Year of the Ox.

Ox years are traditionally tied to openness, bold talent, and confidence. In this spirit, the Maison granted Mr. Liu carte blanche to create a piece to herald in this auspicious Lunar year, carrying with it the promise of hope, togetherness, and bright horizons. SPRING, his dynamic, abstract painting, bursts with vivid hues, movement, and a true sense of change - perfect for the Year of the Ox and springtime renewal."

Conceived as a sensorial invitation to experience the season of rebirth viscerally, the painting is also a visual echo of the depth of Hennessy cognacs, inspired by the artist’s visit to the vineyards and cellars of the Maison Hennessy in Cognac. The vibrant shades of fuchsia, blue, green mirror the season, symbolising its – and our - infinite possibilities for growth. Much the same way the Hennessy Master Blender chooses specific eaux-de-vie for a blend, Liu Wei chose this colour palette to express spring’s optimism.

The emotional resonance of the piece, open to individual interpretation by design, is rooted in a constant quest for what the Beijing-based artist calls, “a certain kind of beauty within a world of possibility.” He further explains, “I hope it will speak to people emotionally, that they will not spend time thinking about what it means…because the meaning lies precisely in the fact that it is supposed to mean something different to each individual and prompt them to ask themselves questions.” As the title promises, SPRING celebrates our collective ability to renew and start afresh.
